The trip from Shinjuku Station on the JR Limited Express train takes two hours and 50 minutes. An extremely convenient option is the Limited Express bus from Matsumoto to Takayama.
JR East Pass holders may purchase Matsumoto to Takayama round trip bus tickets for ¥2,500, less than half the regular price.

Matsumoto Bus Terminal Entrance
The information desk is located on the basement floor of the espa building and the platform is on the first floor of the building. (The photograph above is taken from the Alpico website.)
Notes: Passengers do not need to reserve seats for the bus. However, some passengers may have to stand when the bus is crowded.
